“…the sight of Elon Musk charging towards Wikipedia with his trademark guile and delicacy was so predictable that it was almost relaxing. He saw a collective resource that people prized and he wanted to hurt it.”

Thoth knows Wikipedia’s not perfect, but I’d sooner have it handy than not have it.

Look we have records of Medieval Knights crying out in their sleep, having emotional outbursts or flinching at the sound of clashing metal. We have records of people all through history who were treated badly by people who should have loved them, and having problems knowing who to trust. We have years worth of artists putting their human pain at broken hearts and broken promises into music that makes us cry.

Yes people have been traumatized by awful things for all of history and just like them You didn’t deserve to be hurt either.

Everyone on this website talks about the choice to not have children to end the terrible cycle of familial abuse or whatever but I feel like nobody on here wants to talk about the more mundane and pressing reality of wanting children but being paralyzed by the understanding that bringing them into our current society inherently means traumatizing them in some small way simply because there are no good options.

Like. Dont want to put a child through public school because public school sucks, but homeschool is isolating and private school is not an option for ppl with no money. Dont want to raise a child with a forced gender but attempting to raise a child neutrally may socially isolate them or cause authorities to question your parenting methods. Don't want to raise a child in an isolated suburb where they have nowhere to travel independantly but affordable housing with ample room for families in city environments are basically nonexistent.

It can be hard not to feel judgemental of yourself for wanting to bring a child into the world at all under these conditions. Unlike with refusing to continue the "cursed bloodline" or whatever, there's just no personal pride one can take in deciding not to have kids because the world would force me to make choices that hurt them irregardless of my desires.

calypsolemon

Also like as a survivor of familial abuse I want my child to have a safety net that's not me. I want to know that if my child doesn't feel right coming to me with something for whatever reason, that there would be a secure community they could fall back on. I genuinely think it sucks that so many abuse victims choose to not have children because they think they would fuck them up too when 98% of the problem is not the parent themself but the way our society enables that abuse to fester.

I'm not scared I'd be a terrible parent but I am scared that I would be burdened with the expectation to not only be constantly vigilant of not repeating my abusive upbringing or overcorrecting for it, but to somehow make up for the utter lack of a society that actually cares about the wellbeing of its children. Its fucking Sisyphean and cruel to both parent and child.

calypsolemon

Ok nobody has said anything yet but inb4 someone says something to this effect: this is not an "its wrong to bring children into this world at all if youre not 100% financially prepared and living in a great social environment" take. I say this just bc I acutally have seen takes like that passed around on this website in the past and like. This is a critical examination of how social structures make healthy childrearing more difficult, not a condemnation of poor and struggling parents for having children at all.

I hate that I’m always trying to find cool biology themed stuff to wear but all the “nature inspired” clothing companies just have like two crossed arrows or a minimalistic mountain on a sweatshirt. Fucking lame, that’s barely even nature-adjacent. Put the life cycle of a salamander on a jacket, put hyena skeleton patterns on leggings, put a damn field guide of birds of prey on a peacoat and THEN you can have my money. Do NOT give me a shirt with a leaf on it that says “stay wild” or some bullshit I would much prefer clothing that broadcasts to everyone around me how many teeth an adult Jaguar has or how some pitcher plants can catch and digest rats.

disasterhimbo asked:

Is there anything I can do to help Palestinians besides call my representatives and beg them to stop killing people?

fairuzfan answered:

This is a great question. There are a few things you can do—just off the top of my head:

  • BDS (Boycott, Divest, Sanction) https://bdsmovement.net/
  • Direct Action https://www.palestineaction.org/
  • Urge your University/School/Organization to put out a statement denouncing Israel
  • Organize a Protest/Participate in a local one
  • You might already be doing this but while calling your reps, tell them that as a voter, you’re unwilling to support them in the upcoming election unless they urge the White House to take a stand against Israel and stop funding them
  • Share art/writing/films around Palestinian culture
  • If you’re part of a union, ask them what they’re doing to urge their industry leaders to take a stand against Israel + pressure the White House OR urge them to start a strike/walkout/etc if they’re not doing anything already
  • Talk with your friends IRL about Palestine, whether in an activist capacity or watching a movie or literally anything
  • Reach out to a mosque to see if you can help them with anything
  • See if your city/state council has put out a statement in support of Gazans. If not, try to push them to do so.
  • Donate to Palestine Legal or Direct Action if you have some money to spare
  • KEEP TALKING ON SOCIAL MEDIA!!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know some of these don’t feel like they have as big of an impact on helping Palestinians, but we do need to make an effort not to forget their humanity in the face of continued erasure and the media’s sensationalist rhetoric.

Talking on social media and posting—while not seeming like a lot—does SO much. I know in USAmerica, it’s like yelling into a void, but political analysts are saying that most of the “Global South” has completely lost any amount of goodwill it may have had the past few years. Hopefully, countries will start to put sanctions and embargoes en masse on the US and Israel soon.

Our goals here are BOTH short-term and long-term. We hope for the life and liberation of the Palestinian people, so anything that you can think of might help at some point in the future is encouraged to at least try.

If anyone else has any more ideas, feel free to reblog and add on. Thank you for asking, and here is to a liberated Palestine where Palestinians can live and thrive without fear.

Now is an excellent time to tell your Democratic Congress Critters trans Healthcare is important

If you can't safely contact them in person, here are some other options:

Call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to be connected to the representative of your choice.

Here is one that will send your reps a fax: https://resist.bot/

vaspider

This is extremely important, y'all. They're trying to Hyde Amendment trans care for people of all ages.

Medicaid and Medicare coverage would go away, no matter what state you are in. ACA plan coverage would go away. Hospitals would fully just have to stop offering trans care, full stop, or lose their federal funding.

I know we hate the phone but we absolutely can't sleep on this. If you have a Democrat rep, you absolutely have to tell them to hold the line against this.

msaprildaniels

Please do not let this pass silently. Please call your Representatives and Senators, yes call them and leave a message. This cannot be tolerated, this will kill so many people who are just trying to live our lives.
